Neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia like agitation, depression and apathy often result in increased prescriptions of psychotropics. In Germany, outpatient clinics at psychiatric hospitals play an important role in the treatment of neuropsychiatric symptoms in nursing homes. The aim of this study was to test whether the severity and pharmacotherapy differed in patients treated by outpatient clinics at psychiatric hospitals, as compared to primary care specialists.

To estimate the prevalence of neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia patients in Dutch nursing homes.
Cross-sectional study in a large sample of 1322 demented patients living in 59 dementia special care units (SCUs) in The Netherlands. Symptoms were observed by licensed vocational nurses during regular care-giving in a 2-week observational period prior to assessment.

This study investigates the natural course of neuropsychiatric symptoms and the concomitant use of psychotropic medication among a large and representative sample of nursing-home patients with dementia.
The authors performed two data collections with structured interviews in a 1-year follow-up cohort-study including 26 nursing homes in four counties in two Norwegian health regions. The main outcome measures were baseline and follow-up frequencies, persistence and incidence of neuropsychiatric symptoms, and the change in neuropsychiatric symptoms with regard to the use of psychotropic medication.

To assess the prescribing practice, use and potential adverse effects of psychoactive medications in Singapore nursing homes.
From a list of existing 24 voluntary welfare organisation (VWO) run nursing homes, four homes with the largest bed capacity were selected from the eastern zone of Singapore. When contacted, two homes agreed to participate in the study.
