The neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia, including aggressiveness, agitation, depression, and apathy are often treated with psychotropic drugs and are a frequent reason for hospitalization, placing an economic burden on the health care system. International guidelines recommend syndrome-specific pharmacotherapy. We studied the question whether drug-prescribing practices are, in fact, syndrome-specific.

To estimate the prevalence of neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia patients in Dutch nursing homes.
Cross-sectional study in a large sample of 1322 demented patients living in 59 dementia special care units (SCUs) in The Netherlands. Symptoms were observed by licensed vocational nurses during regular care-giving in a 2-week observational period prior to assessment.

The investigation aimed at assessing the prevalence of depression among residents in a nursing home.
In a rural area of Germany a representative sample was examined by means of the "Brief Assessment Interview" (BAI).
17% had a depressive disorder without dementia, 9% had a mild dementia syndrome and a depressive disorder; a total of 47% suffered from symptoms of dementia without depression.

In five homes for the aged in the city of Bremen that were also nursing homes, we studied the drug supply and drug intake of 301 inmates with particular reference to psychotropics, basing on the available records. The average regular drug intake covered 3.99 drugs.
