The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical and sonographic features of calcifying epitheliomas (pilomatrixomas).
We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data and sonographic appearances of 59 cases of calcifying epitheliomas in 58 patients that were confirmed pathologically.
The mean age of the patients was 26 years (range, 5-69 years) and the female-to-male ratio was 1.

Pilomatrixomas (calcifying epitheliomas of Malherbe) are benign soft-tissue tumors that occur in the dermis or subcutaneous tissues; about 40% are found in children under 10 years of age. More than 80% have microscopic calcification and/or ossification. Although the incidence of radiographically visible calcification is not known, heavily calcified tumors have a distinctive radiographic appearance.

Although pilomatrixomas are frequently encountered by dermatologists and pathologists in the differential diagnosis of head and neck lesions, this is not usually the case among head and neck surgeons. A pilomatrixoma (calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe) is a benign tumour of the hair matrix cells. Histologically it is characterised by the presence of ghost cells, basophilic cells and foreign body cells.

Calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe of pilomatrixoma is a rare benign tumor of the skin. The whites are mainly affected. There appears to be a 3:2 female- to male incidence ratio.
