Few studies discuss the prevalence of oral anticoagulation therapy (OAT) in clinical practice, despite their increasing use worldwide. In America, studies established that 20% to 80% of the patients with indication benefit from OAT. In Romania, there is no data regarding the utilization of oral anticoagulants.

Despite undergoing successful catheter ablation of typical atrial flutter (AFL), patients remain at increased risk for ischemic stroke. However, data on risk prediction tools for the development of stroke after AFL ablation are lacking. This study investigates whether CHA₂DS₂-VASc score is useful for predicting ischemic stroke after successful ablation of typical AFL.

Radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) of the cavo-tricuspid isthmus (CTI) is a common treatment for atrial flutter (AFL). However, achieving bi-directional CTI conduction block may be difficult, partly due to catheter instability.
To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the Amigo® Remote Catheter System (RCS) compared to manual catheter manipulation, during CTI ablation for AFL.

Cardiac conduction and/or rhythm abnormalities (CCRA) are the most frequent and life-threatening complications in DM1. In order to determine prevalence, incidence, characteristics, age of onset and predictors of CCRA, CCRA progression and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in DM1, we collected ECG/24hECG-Holter data from a yearly updated 34-year database of a cohort of 103 DM1 patients without cardiac abnormalities at baseline, followed for at least 1 year. Fifty-five patients developed CCRA [39 developed conduction abnormalities (CCA) and 16 rhythm abnormalities (CRA)], which progressed in 22.

Methods to identify patients at risk for incident HF would be welcome as such patients might benefit from earlier interventions.
From a registry of 1251 patients referred for coronary and/or peripheral angiography, we sought to identify independent predictors of incident HF during follow-up and develop a clinical and biomarker strategy to predict this outcome. There were 991 patients free of prevalent HF at baseline.

Oxygen has long been assumed beneficial for all ill and injured patients. However, hyperoxia may be harmful and aggravate myocardial injury such as that caused by myocardial infarction. We aimed to investigate if hyperoxia increases myocardial injury following direct current cardioversion compared with room air.

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is the most common dysrhythmia in the United States. Patients seen in the emergency department (ED) in rapid AFib are often started on intravenous rate controlling agents and admitted for several days. Although underlying and triggering illnesses must be addressed, AFib, intrinsically, is rarely life threatening and can often be safely managed in an outpatient setting.

Heart failure patients are predisposed to develop arrhythmias. Supraventricular arrhythmias can exacerbate the heart failure symptoms by decreasing the effective cardiac output and their control require pharmacological, electrical, or catheter-based intervention. In the setting of atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation, anticoagulation becomes paramount to prevent systemic or cerebral embolism.

Circulating maternal anti-Ro antibodies can cross the placenta after 16 weeks of gestation and damage the cardiomyocytes and the conducting system leading to myocarditis and fetal arrhythmias. The commonest arrhythmia seen with anti-Ro antibodies is complete heart block, although varying degrees of atrioventricular block and rarely, fetal tachycardias have been described. We describe the echocardiographic diagnosis and management of a fetus with anti-Ro mediated complete heart block who developed atrial flutter in the third trimester.

Spontaneous echo-contrast (SEC) and thrombus observed in trans-esophageal echocardiography (TEE) is known as a strong surrogate marker for future risk of ischemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) or atrial flutter (AFL). The efficacy of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOAC) compared to warfarin to prevent SEC or thrombus in patients with AF or AFL is currently unknown. AF or AFL patients who underwent direct current cardioversion (DCCV) and pre-DCCV TEE evaluation from January 2014 to October 2016 in a single center were analyzed.

To date, no systematic work has been intended to describe spatio-temporal patterns of cardiac rhythms using only short series of RR intervals, to facilitate visual or computerized-aided identification of EKG motifs for use in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to detect and classify eye-catching geometric patterns of Poincaré time-delay plots from different types of cardiac rhythms and arrhythmias using short-term EKG signals.
Approximately 150-300 representative, consecutive beats were retrieved from 24-h Holter registers of 100 patients with different heart rhythms.

Failure to differentiate supraventricular from ventricular arrhythmias is the most frequent cause of inappropriate implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapies. We hypothesized that the postpacing interval (PPI) after overdrive right ventricular pacing may differentiate ventricular (VT) from supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) such as sinus tachycardia, atrial flutter and atrial tachycardia. This hypothesis is based on the entrainment maneuver.

Advances in surgical techniques have led to the survival of most patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) up to their adulthood. During their lifetime, many of them develop atrial tachyarrhythmias due to atrial dilatation and scarring from surgical procedures. More complex defects and palliative repairs are linked to a higher incidence and earlier occurrence of arrhythmias.

Recurring questions when dealing with arrhythmias in athletes are about the cause of the arrhythmia and, more importantly, about the eligibility of the athlete to continue sports activities. In essence, the relation between sports and arrhythmias can be understood along three lines: sports as arrhythmia trigger on top of an underlying problem, sports as arrhythmic substrate promotor, or sports as substrate inducer. Often, there is no sharp divider line between these entities.
