Nasal trauma is a common consequence of athletic competition. The nasal bones are the most commonly fractured facial bone and are particularly at risk during sports participation. Acute management of trauma to the nose includes thorough evaluation of all injuries and may require immediate management for repair of facial lacerations, epistaxis control, or septal hematoma drainage.

No clear consensus yet defines the endpoints for operative learning curves in the transition to minimally invasive endoscopic techniques. This retrospective review of our first 202 patients who underwent endoscopic pituitary resection examines the statistical learning curve related to operative times-a measure of our surgical team's efficiency and complication rate, a reflection of surgical skill and maturity.
Retrospective chart review included patient demographic data, tumor type, operative time, complications, and follow-up.

Traumatic nasal injuries are common in all age groups of the community. Significant nasal trauma can cause nasal fractures and a range of complicating injuries.
This article provides general practitioners (GPs) with a succinct overview of pathology arising from nasal trauma, and a framework on the assessment and management of common nasal injuries.

This study aimed to analyze the results of a modified continuous quilting sutures technique in a series of patients presenting with hematoma and/or abscess of nasal septum (HANS). Only patients with a confirmed diagnosis of HANS without co-morbid conditions (which could predispose to a bleeding tendency), were selected. Following incision and drainage, nasal septal flaps were coapted by applying continuous quilting sutures only.

Nasal hematoma/abscess is an uncommon entity, but capable of leading to serious consequences if not handled meticulously, and with urgency.
To present the management, and outcome of nasal septal hematoma/abscess in a Nigerian tertiary institution.
Consecutive patients diagnosed with nasal septal hematoma/abscess over a 10-year period, treated at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, Nigeria, were prospectively studied.

Nasal septal hematoma is a collection of blood between the cartilage or bone and mucoperichondrium or mucoperiosteum of the nose. This condition requires immediate surgical drainage to prevent complications. All patients need nasal packing postoperatively to prevent recurrence.

Qingfeng Zhang, Delong Liu
To investigate the efficacy of Coblation-channelling for the tongue(CCT) treatment of tongue hypertrophy.
The 31 patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) combining tongue hypertrophy staged as Friedman ll or N were performed CCT after nasal septum surgery, coblation channelling of bilateral inferior turbinate and coblation-assisted UPPP. While the vertical channelling in the base and the body of the tongue, the tilted one parallel side edge and posterior to the tongue were combined.

Nada Alshaikh, Stephen Lo
Nasal septal abscess (NSA) is an uncommon condition. It is a collection of pus in the space between the nasal septum and its overlying mucoperichondrium and/or mucoperiosteum. If left untreated, there are risks of intracranial complications, facial deformity, and delayed facial growth.

Multifocal septic arthritis with Group A Streptococcus secondary to nasal septal abscess.

Int J Pediatr Otorhinolaryngol 2011 Jan 12;75(1):134-6. Epub 2010 Nov 12.
David B Soma, Jason H Homme
This report describes a previously healthy adolescent male who developed a nasal septal abscess following trauma and subsequent multifocal arthritis with Group A Streptococcus requiring surgery and prolonged antibiotics. This sequence of events has not been previously described in the literature. This report highlights the importance of early recognition and treatment of traumatic nasal septal hematoma to reduce the risk of suppurative complications.

Nasal septal abscess is an uncommon condition. Most commonly it is secondary to nasal trauma, which leads to haematoma, and subsequent abscess formation. There are other less common causes like sinusitis, dental infections and furunculosis.

Septal haematoma following nasal trauma is a complication that, if not diagnosed and treated early, may evolve into a nasal septal abscess. We present the case of a 10-year-old male who suffered nasal trauma with fracture and an undiagnosed septal haematoma that evolved into a septal abscess. During drainage of the abscess, necrosis of the quadrangular cartilage was noted.

Septal haematoma after nasal trauma is a complication that can lead to septal abscess if unrecognized or early intervention is not performed. It can cause compression and thereby necrosis that evolve to a septal abscess in which cultures reveal saprophyte bacteria. Cartilage necrosis and destruction can produce impaired breathing and aesthetic deformities with collapse of the dorsum and the tip of the nose.

Endonasal operations such as septoplasty, rhinoplasty, nasal septal reconstruction and conchotomy, as well as endoscopic sinus surgery, especially when combined with turbinectomy and/or submucous resection of the septum, may produce bleeding and postoperative hematoma requiring postoperative hemostatic measures. Since nasal packing may cause pain, rhinorrhea and inconvenience, a more effective and less uncomfortable hemostatic technique is needed.
To compare the hemostatic efficacy of the second-generation surgical sealant (Quixil in Europe and Israel, Crosseal in the USA) to that of nasal packing in endonasal surgery.

A nasal septal abscess is usually the result of an infected hematoma of the septum. A secondary septal abscess may be the result of infections extending from any of the neighbouring tissues. The necrosis of septal cartilage may lead to nasal deformities and severe impairment of nasal patency and growth.

This retrospective study evaluates the incidence and spectrum of infectious complications in 100 consecutive adult nasal septoplasty patients. A total of 12 patients (mean age 40 years; age range 24-55 years) suffered from postoperative infection, and 3/12 had received prophylactic antibiotics. Patients presented with abscess formation (n = 7), submucosal swelling and flush (n = 4) and haematoma and high fever (n = 1).

Frequency and severity of complications have a profound impact on referral patterns for facial orthopedic surgery. Therefore, a retrospective study was undertaken to determine the incidence of such problems in a large series of patients, with the intent to use these data to make possible changes in the perioperative protocol used in our clinic.
The files of all patients operated on between 1992 and 1996 were studied.

Proper management of a nasal septal abscess requires prompt diagnosis, adequate surgical drainage, and antibiotics to prevent the potentially dangerous spread of infection and the development of severe functional and cosmetic sequelae. Most septal abscesses are the result of trauma to the nose with septal hematoma and subsequent infection. We present our experience with nasal septal abscesses in five immunocompromised patients without history of nasal trauma.

Postoperative hematoma is a complication of septal surgery that can be associated with significant morbidity and possibly even mortality in some cases. A simple suction drainage technique using a scalp vein cannula and vacuum tube can prevent a septal hematoma without the need for bulky nasal packing (with its attendant nasal obstruction and risk of bleeding on removal). The technique is also useful for postoperative drainage of an established septal hematoma or abscess secondary to trauma.

Fifty-two patients with a haematoma or abscess of the nasal septum underwent surgical treatment during a period of 10 years in the ENT Department at Aalborg Hospital. Of these, 27 patients with a haematoma and 12 patients with an abscess were re-examined. In all the patients except 1, trauma was the cause of the lesion.

Although the disorder is said to be uncommon, three cases of abscess of the nasal septum, two in adults, one in a child, were seen during a period of four months. Each patient had a recent history of nasal trauma and presented with severe nasal obstruction. In each case, the septal cartilage was also found to be extensively destroyed when the abscess was drained.
