Albeit it is rare, the authors report a stage 3 Kummell disease case. It is diagnosed by dynamic thoracic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Because there is no established strategy on stage 3 Kummell disease, we performed percutaneous kyphoplasty at first, but unfortunately made a revision surgery to remove the polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cement after the failure of percutaneous kyphoplasty.

Although several studies reported that Balloon kyphoplasty (BK) or percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) could improve pulmonary functions, there is no study to compare the efficacy and safety of 2 procedures in COPD patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) and investigate the reason why they could improve pulmonary functions.
Two procedures, including BK and PVP were performed in 61 COPD patients with single-level OVCFS. VAS-score, ODI, pulmonary function and radiological parameters (Anterior vertebral body height ratio, posterior vertebral body height ratio and Local kyphotic angle) were evaluated preoperatively and 1 week, 3 months and 12 moths postoperatively, respectively.

Spinal metastases are the most commonly encountered tumour of the spine, occurring in up to 40% of patients with cancer. Each year, approximately 5% of cancer patients will develop spinal metastases. This number is expected to increase as the life expectancy of cancer patients increases.

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) cement is widely used for percutaneous kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty (PKP and PVP) but possesses formidable shortcomings due to non-degradability. Here, a biodegradable replacement is developed.
Calcium phosphate cement (CPC) was redesigned by incorporating starch and BaSO(new cement named as CPB).

Given the increasing societal focus on health care utilization and value-based care, it is essential to understand the demographic and economic data surrounding percutaneous vertebral augmentation procedures performed in the United States. Double-blinded prospective randomized controlled trials have shown no benefit to the use of vertebroplasty over a sham procedure in the treatment of vertebral fractures. Contrastingly, kyphoplasty may be beneficial when appropriately indicated.

Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures are a leading cause of disability and associated morbidities among Indian population. Worldwide, approximately 20% of elderly population above 70 years and 16% of postmenopausal women are suffering from it. Vertebral compression fractures should be aggressively treated with minimally invasive techniques such as Percutaneous Vertebroplasty (PVP) or Percutaneous Kyphoplasty (PKP) to minimize pain and disability associated with it.

Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are minimally invasive techniques applied for the treatment of vertebral fractures. Since not all vertebral compression fractures are the same, a tailored-based approach is necessary for optimum efficacy and safety results. Nowadays, different cements and materials are proposed as alternatives to the original poly-methylmethacrylate aiming to overcome the limitations and the risks governing its use.

Osteoporotic vertebral fractures constitute at least 50% of the osteoporotic fractures that happen worldwide. Occurrence of osteoporotic fractures make the elderly patient susceptible for further fractures and increases the morbidity due to kyphosis and pain; the mortality risk is also increased in these patients. Most fractures occur in the thoracic and thoracolumbar region and are often stable.

Cement augmentation via percutaneous vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty for treatment of spinal metastasis is a well-established treatment option. We assessed whether elevated intrametastatic pressure during cement augmentation results in an increased dissemination of tumour cells into the vascular circulation. We prospectively collected blood from patients with osteolytic spinal column metastases and analysed the prevalence of circulating tumour cells (CTCs) at three time-points: preoperatively, 20 minutes after cement augmentation, and 3-5 days postoperatively.

Osteoporotic vertebral fractures are one of the major health problems in the world. Minimally invasive surgical treatment has great advantages compared with conservative treatment in treating these fractures, because it eliminates pain and functional disability. The percutaneous intravertebral expandable titanium device SpineJack (Vexim SA, Balma, France) is beneficial compared with other kyphoplasty devices, showing results that are maintained over time and a reduction in complications.

BACKGROUND The definition of a vertebral fracture is usually based on the presence of a deformation of the vertebral body and this can be misleading in the presence of a fracture without radiologic collapse with the definition of occult osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OOVFs). STIR sequence of MRI images showing hyperintensity signal was the most confirmative screening examination used to determine the presence of painful OOVFs. To date, clinical management of OOVFs has been rarely discussed.

Painful spinal metastases usually occur in malignant neoplastic disease. Treatment for bone metastases has been largely conservative, and it includes the use of high doses of analgesics, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and bisphosphonates; however, results are sometimes transient and ineffective. In the presence of neurological involvement a surgical strategy should be considered.

Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) commonly cause both acute and chronic back pain, substantial spinal deformity, functional disability and decreased quality of life and increase the risk of future vertebral fractures and mortality. Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP), balloon kyphoplasty (BK) and non-surgical treatment (NST) are mostly used for the treatment of OVCFs. However, which treatment is preferred is unknown.

Currently, there is no general consensus about the management of osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVF). In the past, conservative treatment for at least one month was deemed appropriate for the majority of vertebral fractures. When pain persisted after conservative treatment, it was necessary to consider surgical interventions including: vertebroplasty for vertebral fractures with less than 30% loss of height of the affected vertebral body and kyphoplasty for vertebral fractures with greater than 30% loss of height.
