The ideal material for reconstruction of the scapholunate interosseous ligament (SLIL) should replicate the mechanical properties of the native SLIL to recreate normal kinematics and prevent posttraumatic arthritis. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the cyclic torsional and tensile properties of the native SLIL and load to failure tensile properties of the dorsal SLIL.
The SLIL bone complex was resected from 10 fresh-frozen cadavers.

End-effector robots are commonly used in robot-assisted neuro-rehabilitation therapies for upper limbs where the patient's hand can be easily attached to a splint. Nevertheless, they are not able to estimate and control the kinematic configuration of the upper limb during the therapy. However, the Range of Motion (ROM) together with the clinical assessment scales offers a comprehensive assessment to the therapist.

Most transhumeral amputees report that their prosthetic device lacks functionality, citing the control strategy as a major limitation. Indeed, they are required to control several degrees of freedom with muscle groups primarily used for elbow actuation. As a result, most of them choose to have a one-degree-of-freedom myoelectric hand for grasping objects, a myoelectric wrist for pronation/supination, and a body-powered elbow.

During 1994-2003, we treated 20 patients with post-traumatic radial-sided wrist pain and dynamic radiocarpal instability. After arthroscopy confirmed no disruption of the radioscaphocapitate ligament and an increased laxity of the ligament, we passed a strip of the radioscaphocapitate ligament through the long radio-lunate ligament. The rationale of this procedure was to increase tension of the two ligaments and to close the space of Poirier.

Causality has not been formally demonstrated between carpal tunnel syndrome and osteoarthritis of the wrist or at the base of the thumb. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between carpal tunnel syndrome and concomitant degenerative osteoarthritis of the wrist or basal thumb joint. We hypothesised that wrist osteoarthritis by reducing the free volume of the carpal tunnel would be associated with carpal tunnel syndrome, while basal thumb osteoarthritis would show no direct correlation with carpal tunnel syndrome.

Several malformations have been attributed to the process of vascular disruption. The central hypothesis for this etiology is that blood flow to a structure has been altered after that structure had formed normally. The decreased blood flow leads to hypoxia, endothelial cell damage, hemorrhage, tissue loss, and repair.

Bone density may influence the primary fixation of cementless implants, and poor bone density may increase the risk of implant failure. Before deciding on using total joint replacement as treatment in osteoarthritis of the trapeziometacarpal joint, it is valuable to determine the trapezium bone density. The aim of this study was to: (1) determine the correlation between measurements of bone mineral density of the trapezium obtained by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans by a circumference method and a new inner-ellipse method; and (2) to compare those to measurements of bone density obtained by computerized tomography (CT)-scans in Hounsfield units (HU).

We prove the feasibility of decomposing high density surface EMG signals from forearm muscles in non-isometric wrist motor tasks of normally limbed and limb-deficient individuals with the perspective of using the decoded neural information for prosthesis control. For this purpose, we recorded surface EMG signals during motions of three degrees of freedom of the wrist in seven normally limbed subjects and two patients with limb deficiency. The signals were decomposed into individual motor unit activity with a convolutive blind source separation algorithm.

Autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD), which is characterized by an increased presence of thyroid autoantibodies (TAbs), such as antibodies against thyroid peroxidase (TPOAbs) and antibodies against thyroglobulin (TgAbs), has been reported to be associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) because AITD and RA both involve autoimmunity. However, few data are available on the incidence of TAbs in Chinese RA patients, and studies on the association between TAbs and joint damage as well as synovitis in RA patients remain sparse. Here, we aimed to evaluate the incidence of TAbs in a consecutive Chinese RA cohort and to investigate whether the elevated presence of TAbs is associated with joint damage and synovitis in RA patients.
