Influenza epidemics are a major public health concern and require a costly and time-consuming surveillance system at different geographical scales. The main challenge is being able to predict epidemics. Besides traditional surveillance systems, such as the French Sentinel network, several studies proposed prediction models based on internet-user activity.

The selection of patients with metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) who may benefit from targeted tyrosine kinase inhibitors has been a challenge, even more so now with the advent of new therapies. Hilar fat infiltration (HFI) is a validated prognostic factor in nonmetastatic ccRCC (TNM 2009 staging system) but has never been studied in metastatic patients. We aimed to assess its phenotype and prognostic effect in patients with metastatic ccRCC treated with first-line sunitinib.

Disturbances of time perception could explain some behavioral disorders in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and the aim of this preliminary study was to evaluate time perception in these patients. 7 patients with DLB (mean age = 82±6,8 years) were compared to 7 cognitively normal subjects (m = 81.2±6,8 years) for spatiotemporal orientation, verbal estimation, semantic knowledge, rhythm perception and verbal time estimation.

The Albumin-Bilirubin (ALBI) grade was proposed as an objective means to evaluate liver function in patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC). ALBI grade 1 vs 2 were proposed as stratification factors within the Child Pugh (CP) A class. However, the original publication did not provide comparison with the subclassification by points (5-15) within the CP classification.

To evaluate the performance of the collection of cases of anaphylactic shock during anesthesia in the Regional Pharmacovigilance Center of Rennes and the contribution of a query in the biomedical data warehouse of the French University Hospital of Rennes in 2009.
Different sources were evaluated: the French pharmacovigilance database (including spontaneous reports and reports from a query in the database of the programme de médicalisation des systèmes d'information [PMSI]), records of patients seen in allergo-anesthesia (source considered as comprehensive as possible) and a query in the data warehouse.
Analysis of allergo-anesthesia records detected all cases identified by other methods, as well as two other cases (nine cases in total).

Tumoural portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is a major prognostic factor in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The efficacy of sorafenib, the only treatment approved at an advanced stage, is limited. Based on previous data, selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT), or (90)Y radioembolization, seems an interesting option.

This work proposes an integrated workflow for secondary use of medical data to serve feasibility studies, and the prescreening and monitoring of research studies. All research issues are initially addressed by the Clinical Research Office through a research portal and subsequently redirected to relevant experts in the determined field of concentration. For secondary use of data, the workflow is then based on the clinical data warehouse of the hospital.

Recruitment of patients in clinical trials is nowadays preoccupying, as the inclusion rate is particularly low. The main identified factors are the multiplicity of open clinical trials, the high number and complexity of eligibility criteria, and the additional workload that a systematic search of the clinical trials a patient could be enrolled in for a physician. The principal objective of the ASTEC project is to automate the prescreening phase during multidisciplinary meetings (MDM).

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma's incidence is increasing. We studied the efficacy of Y selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) as first-line treatment, with chemotherapy, and compared with the results of chemotherapy alone.
We retrospectively studied data from patients treated at our institution with glass microspheres SIRT for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma as part of first-line treatment in combination with chemotherapy.

The performance of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) is often hindered by recruitment difficulties. This study aims to explore the pre-screening phase of four prostate cancer RCTs to identify the impact of a systematic pre-selection of eligible patients for RCT recruitment.
The pre-screening of four RCTs opened at the Comprehensive Cancer Center in Rennes was analyzed retrospectively (French Genitourinary Tumor Group (GETUG) 14, 15, 16, and 17).

The aim of our study was to analyze which of these 2 techniques (biceps femoris myocutaneous flap vs gluteus maximus myocutaneous flap) gave the best result for ischial pressure ulcers treatment.
A retrospective comparative analysis of medical records for stage III and IV pressure ulcers was conducted between the 2 groups by Fisher exact test for categorical variables (significance level P <0.05) followed by a survival analysis by the Kaplan-Meier method.

Case-based reasoning (CBR) is an emerging decision making paradigm in medical research where new cases are solved relying on previously solved similar cases. Usually, a database of solved cases is provided, and every case is described through a set of attributes (inputs) and a label (output). Extracting useful information from this database can help the CBR system providing more reliable results on the yet to be solved cases.

The surveillance of Surgical Site Infections (SSI) contributes to the management of risk in French hospitals. Manual identification of infections is costly, time-consuming and limits the promotion of preventive procedures by the dedicated teams. The introduction of alternative methods using automated detection strategies is promising to improve this surveillance.

The logistic model is widely used to assess the risk factors for surgical site infections (SSIs). An alternative to the logistic model is the Cox model. The objective of this study was to compare these 2 models to identify the risk factors of SSIs in neurosurgery.

Case-based reasoning (CBR) systems use similarity functions to solve new problems with past situations. K-nearest neighbors algorithm (K-NN) have been used in CBR systems to define new cases status according to characteristics of past nearest cases. We proposed a new hybrid approach combining logistic regression (LR) with K-NN to optimize CBR classification.

Aneurysmal regression is a reliable marker for long-lasting success after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). The aim of this study was to identify the preoperative factors that can predictably lead to aneurysmal sac regression after EVAR, according to the reporting standards of the Society for Vascular Surgery and the International Society of Cardiovascular Surgery (SVS/ISCVS).
From 199 patients treated by EVAR between 2000 and 2009, 164 completed computed tomography angiographies and duplex scan follow-up images were available.

Holoprosencephaly (HPE) is the most common forebrain defect in humans. It results from incomplete midline cleavage of the prosencephalon.
A large European series of 645 HPE probands (and 699 relatives), consisting of 51% fetuses and 49% liveborn children, is reported.

High amount of relevant information is contained in reports stored in the electronic patient records and associated metadata. R-oogle is a project aiming at developing information retrieval engines adapted to these reports and designed for clinicians. The system consists in a data warehouse (full-text reports and structured data) imported from two different hospital information systems.
