In biology, all protein channels share a common feature of containing narrow pore regions with hydrophobic functional groups and selectivity filter regions abundant with charged residues, which work together to account for fast and selective mass transport in and out of cells. In this work, an ultrathin layer of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was evaporated on the top orifices of charged silica nanochannels (2-3 nm in diameter and 60 nm in length) vertically attached to the electrode surface, and the resulting structure is designated as heterogeneous silica nanochannels (HSNs). As evidenced by voltammetric studies, the transport of ionic species in these HSNs was controlled by both hydrophobic rejection and electrostatic force arising from the top PDMS layer and from the bottom silica nanochannels, respectively.

Gap junction-mediated cell-cell interactions are highly conserved and play essential roles in cell survival, proliferation, differentiation and patterning. We report that Connexin 32 (Cx32)-mediated gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) is necessary for human embryonic stem cell-derived hepatocytes (hESC-Heps) during step-wise hepatic lineage restriction and maturation. Vitamin K2, previously shown to promote Cx32 expression in mature hepatocytes, up-regulated Cx32 expression and GJIC activation during hepatic differentiation and maturation, resulting in significant increases of hepatic markers expression and hepatocyte functions.

We report in this work the fabrication of ultrathin silica nanochannel membranes inhomogeneously modified by polydimethysiloxane (PDMS), designated as PDMS-SNM, for hydrophobicity-based molecular filtration and detection. The modification was accomplished by spatially selective evaporation of hydrophobic PDMS oligomers onto the top surface of the membrane and orifice of silica nanochannels. Thanks to this hydrophobic ultrathin layer and beneath ultrasmall channels (2-3 nm in diameter), only small hydrophobic molecules are able to transport through the PDMS-SNM, whereas hydrophilic and large ones are remarkably inhibited.

Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Gansu Corridor of China with distinct geographic and climatic conditions are remote and less disturbed by humans, in which are likely to find some new strains of fungal entomopathogens against B-biotype whiteflies that is a very important invading pest worldwide. In this research, nineteen strains among six species of entomogenous fungi were isolated from the soil samples collected from 32 locations in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Gansu Corridor. From the data of isolation rates, it was indicated that the good biodiversity of entomogenous fungi was found in the soil covered good vegetations.

The terrestrial biosphere can release or absorb the greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), and therefore has an important role in regulating atmospheric composition and climate. Anthropogenic activities such as land-use change, agriculture and waste management have altered terrestrial biogenic greenhouse gas fluxes, and the resulting increases in methane and nitrous oxide emissions in particular can contribute to climate change. The terrestrial biogenic fluxes of individual greenhouse gases have been studied extensively, but the net biogenic greenhouse gas balance resulting from anthropogenic activities and its effect on the climate system remains uncertain.

This study evaluated the in situ ruminal degradability, and subsequent small intestinal digestibility (SID) of dry matter, crude protein (CP), and amino acids (AA) of cottonseed meal (CSM), sunflower seed meal (SFSM) and distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) by using the modified three-step in vitro procedure. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of preparation methods on cocrystallization between baicalein (BE) and nicotinamide (NCT), their intermolecular interaction, and to demonstrate that BE-NCT cocrystal can achieve the simultaneous enhancement in solubility, dissolution, and oral bioavailability of BE.
