The prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has dramatically increased globally during recent decades. Intake of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), mainly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6n-3), is believed to be beneficial to the development of NAFLD. However, little information is available with regard to the effect of flaxseed oil rich in-linolenic acid (ALA, C18:3n-3), a plant-derived n-3 PUFA, in improving NAFLD.

Excessive radiation exposure is still a major concern in 4D cone-beam computed tomography (4D-CBCT) due to its prolonged scanning duration. Radiation dose can be effectively reduced by either under-sampling the x-ray projections or reducing the x-ray flux. However, 4D-CBCT reconstruction under such low-dose protocols is prone to image artifacts and noise.

Radiotherapy is a primary oncological treatment modality that also damages normal tissue, including the skin, and causes radiation dermatitis (RD). Here, we explore the mechanism of acute epidermal damage in radiation dermatitis. Two distinctive phases in the damage response were identified: an early destructive phase, where a burst of reactive oxygen species induces loss of E-cadherin-mediated cell contact, followed by a regenerative phase, during which Wnt and Hippo signaling are activated.

The integration of somatosensory information is generally assumed to be a function of the central nervous system (CNS). Here we describe fully functional GABAergic communication within rodent peripheral sensory ganglia and show that it can modulate transmission of pain-related signals from the peripheral sensory nerves to the CNS. We found that sensory neurons express major proteins necessary for GABA synthesis and release and that sensory neurons released GABA in response to depolarization.

How trees allocate photosynthetic products to primary height growth and secondary radial growth reflects their capacity to best use environmental resources. Despite substantial efforts to explore tree height-diameter relationship empirically and through theoretical modeling, our understanding of the biological mechanisms that govern this phenomenon is still limited. By thinking of stem woody biomass production as an ecological system of apical and lateral growth components, we implement game theory to model and discern how these two components cooperate symbiotically with each other or compete for resources to determine the size of a tree stem.

Detecting how genes regulate biological shape has become a multidisciplinary research interest because of its wide application in many disciplines. Despite its fundamental importance, the challenges of accurately extracting information from an image, statistically modeling the high-dimensional shape and meticulously locating shape quantitative trait loci (QTL) affect the progress of this research. In this article, we propose a novel integrated framework that incorporates shape analysis, statistical curve modeling and genetic mapping to detect significant QTLs regulating variation of biological shape traits.

Image textures in computed tomography colonography (CTC) have great potential for differentiating non-neoplastic from neoplastic polyps and thus can advance the current CTC detection-only paradigm to a new level with diagnostic capability. However, image textures are frequently compromised, particularly in low-dose CT imaging. Furthermore, texture feature extraction may vary, depending on the polyp spatial orientation variation, resulting in variable results.

Aging is a principal risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases and especially shares similar pathologic mechanisms to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques deposition and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) are the prominent age-dependent pathologies implicated in the cognitive deficits. Accumulation of mis-folded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum triggers a cellular stress response called the unfolded protein response (UPR), the activation of which is increased in AD patients.

Inflammatory response in the vasculature, including the overexpression of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-1β, has been demonstrated to increase the risk of thrombosis development. Chebulagic acid (CA) is a key chemical component in the traditional Mongolian anti-thrombotic drug Garidi-13, and has been suggested to exert anti-inflammatory and anti-infective effects. The present study aimed to evaluate the regulatory impact of CA on a number of biological processes, including lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation, LPS-promoted mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) activation and the expression of toll-like receptor (TLR)4 in EA.

To continue our effort on developing magnetic resonance (MR) cystography, we introduce a novel nonrigid 3-D registration method to compensate for bladder wall motion and deformation in dynamic MR scans, which are impaired by relatively low signal-to-noise ratio in each time frame. The registration method is developed on the similarity measure of α-information, which has the potential of achieving higher registration accuracy than the commonly used mutual information (MI) measure for either monomodality or multimodality image registration. The α-information metric was also demonstrated to be superior to both the mean squares and the cross-correlation metrics in multimodality scenarios.

To reduce radiation dose in X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging, one common strategy is to lower the tube current and exposure time settings during projection data acquisition. However, this strategy would inevitably increase the projection data noise, and the resulting image by the conventional filtered back-projection (FBP) method may suffer from excessive noise and streak artifacts. The well-known edge-preserving nonlocal means (NLM) filtering can reduce the noise-induced artifacts in the FBP reconstructed image, but it sometimes cannot completely eliminate the artifacts, especially under the very low-dose circumstance when the image is severely degraded.

We present a complete evaluation for the prompt η_{c} production at the LHC at next-to-leading order in α_{s} in nonrelativistic QCD. By assuming heavy-quark spin symmetry, the recently observed η_{c} production data by LHCb results in a very strong constraint on the upper bound of the color-octet long-distance matrix element ⟨O^{J/ψ}(^{1}S_{0}^{[8]})⟩ of J/ψ. We find this upper bound is consistent with our previous study of the J/ψ yield and polarization and can give good descriptions for the measurements, but the upper bound is inconsistent with some other theoretical estimates.

By measuring gene expression at an unprecedented resolution and throughput, RNA-seq has played a pivotal role in studying biological functions. Its typical application in clinical medicine is to identify the discrepancies of gene expression between two different types of cancer cells, sensitive and resistant to chemotherapeutic treatment, in a hope to predict drug response. Here we modified and used a mechanistic model to identify distinct patterns of gene expression in response of different types of breast cancer cell lines to chemotherapeutic treatment.

Growing evidence suggests that the somatic/perisomatic region of sensory neurons can influence peripheral sensory transmission. Control of resting membrane potential (Erest) is an important mechanism regulating excitability, but surprisingly little is known about how Erest is regulated in sensory neuron somata or how changes in somatic/perisomatic Erest affect peripheral sensory transmission.
