Background and purpose - Hexapod ring fixators such as the Taylor Spatial Frame (TSF) have shown good outcomes. Distraction osteogenesis biologically resembles fracture healing with distinctive characteristics notably in the distraction phase of osteogenesis. In the latency phase of bone lengthening, like in the inflammatory phase of fracture repair, interleukines are released and act with growth factors released from platelets in the local haematoma, leading to attraction, proliferation and differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into osteoblasts and other differentiated mesenchymal cells. These in turn produce matrix, collagen fibers and growth factors.

Despite considerable changes in the treatment of of late-detected congenital or developmental hip dislocation (DDH) during the last 50 years, it is unclear whether and to what degree these changes have led to better long-term outcome for the patients.
The aims of this study were to see whether decreasing use of skin traction and instead a more aggressive approach to open reduction resulted in (1) reduced use of secondary procedures; (2) improved radiographic appearance of the hips at long-term followup; and (3) changes in the proportion of patients developing avascular necrosis.
Two groups of patients were compared retrospectively.

Hexabromocyclododecane containing polystyrene foam obtained from the building and construction market has been co-incinerated in a full-scale waste incineration plant. The co-feeding of 1 and 2 wt% of polystyrene foam had no influence on the operation of the plant. The bromine content increased the raw gas hydrogen bromide concentration slightly.

We assessed whether an intramedullary lengthening device would reduce the problems normally associated with the external fixation technique. We also wanted to determine whether it is a reliable construct for limb lengthening and deformity correction in the femur.
We conducted a matched-pair comparison of 30 femoral lengthenings, 15 with a motorized intramedullary nail (the nail group) and 15 lengthenings with an external ring fixator (the fixator group).

There is little knowledge concerning outcomes for middle-aged adults who were treated for late-detected developmental dislocation of the hip. The aims of this retrospective study were to evaluate the fifty-year clinical and radiographic results after closed reduction and to identify prognostic factors.

We modified the method for tibial epiphysiodesis by solely using a lateral approach to the physis. From this small-incision approach, the lateral as well as the medial part of the tibial physis were ablated. The aim of our study was to see if this operative technique might be as effective as a bilateral approach, and reduce the operation time and usage time of the image intensifier.

The aim of the current study was to see how different interlocking mechanisms would affect construct stability and overall failure in the treatment of two-part surgical neck fractures in the proximal humerus in vitro.
Left and right bones of eight pairs of fresh-frozen human cadaveric humeri were assigned to either a group with conventional or a group with angular stable distal interlocking. The different experimental interlocking mechanisms were used in a surgical neck fracture model of the humerus (Orthopaedic Trauma Association 11- A3) stabilized by a proximal humeral nail.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate our treatment protocol for certain physeal injuries requiring complete epiphysiodesis of an injured physis, angular correction and lengthening with the Ilizarov method and overcorrection of length according to calculated loss of remaining growth. Five patients (age: 12 to 14 years) were operated with angular correction and lengthening in combination with complete epiphysiodesis. Angular deformities measured 12 degrees to 24 degrees and limb length discrepancies (LLD's) 15 to 60 mm.

A direct convergent two-component synthesis of quinolines from alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones and o-aminophenylboronic acid derivatives is reported. The reaction is regiocomplementary to the traditional Skraup-Doebner-Von Miller synthesis and proceeds under basic rather than strongly acidic conditions. Quinolines substituted in the benzenoid ring can be accessed by using substituted o-aminophenylboronates prepared by direct palladium-catalyzed borylation of the corresponding o-bromoanilines.

Whether or not the fibula should be fixated in combined fractures of the tibia and fibula remains controversial. Several clinical and biomechanical studies have investigated the role of the fibula in lower leg fractures without leading to a common conclusion. We assumed that an intact or stable fibula would provide better healing conditions in lower leg fractures treated with an intramedullary nail.
