Future advances in energy storage systems rely on identification of appropriate target materials and deliberate synthesis of the target materials with control of their physiochemical properties in order to disentangle the contributions of distinct properties to the functional electrochemistry. This goal demands systematic inquiry using model materials that provide the opportunity for significant synthetic versatility and control. Ideally, a material family that enables direct manipulation of characteristics including composition, defects, and crystallite size while remaining within the defined structural framework would be necessary.

The loss of intervertebral disc (IVD) cells due to excessive apoptosis is a central factor in the process of IVD degeneration. However, whether interleukin-1β (IL-1β) induces apoptosis through the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway in annulus fibrosus cells (AFCs) has not been investigated. In this study, we observed increases in expression of Bax, caspase-3, and caspase-9, and a decrease in expression of Bcl-2 in patients with degenerative IVDs.

Excluding grazers is one of most efficient ways to restore degraded grasslands in desert-steppe communities, but may negatively affect the recovery of plant species diversity. However, diversity differences between grazed and fenced grasslands in desert-steppe are poorly known. In adesert steppe community in Northern China, we established six plots to examine spatial patterns of plant species diversity under grazed and fenced conditions, respectively.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the mechanism of action by which naringin reverses the resistance of ovarian cancer cells to cisplatin. Semi-quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and western blotting assays were used to detect the effects of different concentrations of naringin on the expressions of nuclear factor (NF)-κB and P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in the SKOV3/CDDP cell line. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) targeting NF-κB was designed and synthesized to silence NF-κB, and recombinant plasmid vectors overexpressing NF-κB were constructed to transfect cells.

In this paper, we study synchronization of heterogeneous linear networks with distinct inner coupling matrices. Firstly, for synchronous networks, we show that any synchronous trajectory will converge to a corresponding synchronous state. Then, we provide an invariant set, which can be exactly obtained by solving linear equations and then used for characterizing synchronous states.

Benzotriazoles (BTRs) and benzothiazoles (BTHs) are two groups of heterocyclic compounds that are widely detected in the environment. In this study, the levels of BTRs and BTHs in 79 paired maternal urine and amniotic fluid samples from Tianjin were investigated. BTRs were detected in most maternal urine samples, with a median concentration of ∑BTRs of 0.

Cardiac fibrosis is one of the primary mechanisms of ventricular remodeling, and there is no effective method for reversal. Activation of calcium sensing receptor (CaSR) has been reported to be involved in the development of myocardial fibrosis, but the molecular mechanism for CaSR activation has not yet been clarified and needs to be further explored. Here, we found that AngII induces cardiac fibroblast proliferation and phenotypic transformation in a dose-dependent manner with increased CaSR and autophagy related protein (Beclin1, LC3B) expression.

PEAK1 is upregulated in multiple human malignancies and has been associated with tumor invasion and metastasis, but little is known about the role of PEAK1 in colorectal cancer (CRC) progression. We investigated the expression pattern, function and regulatory mechanisms of PEAK1 in CRC. Here, we found that PEAK1 is overexpressed in CRC tissues and that high PEAK1 expression predicts poor survival in colon cancer but not rectal cancer.

Reliable and accurate detection of telomerase activity is crucial for better understanding its role in cancer cells and further exploring its function in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Here, we construct a smart DNA tweezer (DT) for detection of telomerase activity. The DT is assembled by three specially-designed single-stranded oligonucleotides: a central strand dually-labeled with donor/acceptor fluorophores and two arm strands containing overhangs complementary to telomerase reaction products (TRPs).

We report the fabrication of large-area holographic diffraction gratings on a curved surface from transferred photopolymer films by introducing a water-soluble interlayer. The holographic gratings on a curved surface have a diffraction efficiency of ∼63%, which is ∼80% of the recorded holographic film on a flat surface. By transferring a recorded holographic grating to a flat substrate, we obtained rainbow holographic gratings under white light illumination.

The electrocatalytic activity of carbon-based non-precious metal composites towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is far from that of the recognized Pt/C catalyst. Thus, it is necessary to exploit novel catalysts based on multicomponent carbon-based composites with both high activity and high stability. Herein, a bottom-up strategy was used for constructing bamboo-like N-doped graphitic CNTs with a few encapsulated Co and VN nanoparticles (namely, NGT-CoV) by adopting melamine as both a nitrogen source and a carbon source.

An enoylreductase (ER) domain of a polyketide synthase module recruiting a methylmalonate extender unit sets the C2 methyl branch to either the S or R configuration during processing of a polyketide intermediate carried by an acyl carrier protein (ACP) domain. In the present study, pantetheine- and ACP-bound trans-2-methylcrotonyl substrate surrogates were used to scrutinize the stereospecificity of the ER domains. The pantetheine-bound thioester was reduced to mixtures of both 2R and 2S products, whereas the expected 2S epimer was almost exclusively generated when the cognate ACP-bound substrate surrogate was utilized.

In this study, the effect of TNF-α level on ETN clearance (CL) was investigated, and the TNF-α concentration was initially set as a correction factor for allometric scaling to improve the predictions of individual ETN CLs. Individual ETN CLs and TNF-α concentrations in healthy volunteers and patients with AS were determined by performing ETN pharmacokinetic studies in the two cohorts.

Sarcomas arise from primitive mesenchymal cells, which are classified, into two main groups: Bone and soft tissue sarcomas. We have searched all-important electronic databases including Google scholar and PubMed for the collection of latest literature pertaining to pediatric sarcomas. Latest literature confirmed that these tumors are relatively rare and represent only 1% of all malignancies but they have higher incidence in children.

It has been well established that environmental and occupational exposure to heavy metal causes cancer in several organs. Although the exact mechanism of heavy metal carcinogenesis remains elusive, metal-generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) are essential. ROS can play two roles in metal carcinogenesis; two stages in the process of metal carcinogenesis differ in the amounts of ROS activating a dual redox-mediated mechanism.

The epigenetic factor SIRT1 can promote prostate cancer progression, but it is unclear whether SIRT1 contributes to neuroendocrine differentiation. In this study, we showed that androgen deprivation can induce reactive oxygen species production and that reactive oxygen species, in turn, activate SIRT1 expression. The increased SIRT1 expression induces neuroendocrine differentiation of prostate cancer cells by activating the Akt pathway.

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are extremely sensitive to the surrounding refractive index and have found important applications in ultrasensitive label-free sensing. Reducing the linewidth of an SPP mode is an effective way to improve the figure of merit (FOM) and hence the sensitivity of the plasmonic mode. Many efforts have been devoted to achieving a narrow linewidth by mode coupling, which inevitably results in an asymmetrical lineshape compromising the performance.

Deciphering neuronal networks governing specific brain functions is a longstanding mission in neuroscience, yet global manipulation of protein functions pharmacologically or genetically lacks sufficient specificity to reveal a neuronal protein's function in a particular neuron or a circuitry. Photostimulation presents a great venue for researchers to control neuronal proteins with high temporal and spatial resolution. Recently, an approach to optically control the function of a neuronal protein directly in neurons has been demonstrated using genetically encoded light-sensitive Unnatural amino acids (Uaas).
