Few modifiable risk factors are known to be associated with the presence and progression of diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN).
We have analyzed in 405 type 2 diabetic (T2DM) subjects (169 women) the association of plasma homocysteine with the presence of DPN measured with the Semmes-Weinstein (SW) monofilament test. A score below 4 was considered an altered SW monofilament test.

Familial combined hyperlipidemia (FCH) is a genetic model of atherogenic dyslipidemia with insulin resistance and early coronary disease. Our objective was to evaluate the presence of carotid alterations as a marker of systemic atherosclerosis in subjects with FCH and assess the effect of 80 mg of atorvastatin per day in carotid plaque thickness after 2 years.
100 non diabetic subjects with FCH in primary prevention were consecutively included.

Multiple eccrine hidrocystomas of de upper lip are bening cystic lesions that are associated with a chronic course. It is reported in the literature as a rare pathology.
We describe the case of a 60-year-old woman who was referred to the dermatology department for presenting multiple lesions translucent papular asymptomic two years of evolution on the upper lip.

Conflict between two ethical and legal conditions such as life and freedom is frequent in medical practice. Jurisdiction has handed down contradictory decisions and edicts when placing life (and therefore the lex artis of physicians) above Jehovah's witnesses' right to refuse blood transfusions. However, in principle, the right to life takes precedence over the patient's autonomy because, based on professional ethics, physicians have a duty to attempt a cure.

Whether asymptomatic human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients can interrupt treatment remains unknown.
We performed a prospective, observational study of 46 patients who started therapy with >300 CD4+ cells/mm3 and/or <70,0000 HIV-1 RNA copies/mL. Patients had been receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for at least 6 months.
