Topiramate (TPM) is suggested to be a promising medication for treatment of methamphetamine (METH) dependence, but the molecular basis remains to be elucidated.
Among 140 METH-dependent participants randomly assigned to receive either TPM (N = 69) or placebo (N = 71) in a previously conducted randomized controlled trial, 50 TPM- and 49 placebo-treated participants had a total 212 RNA samples available at baseline, week 8, and week 12 time points. Following our primary analysis of gene expression data, we reanalyzed the microarray expression data based on a latent class analysis of binary secondary outcomes during weeks 1-12 that provided a classification of 21 responders and 31 non-responders with consistent responses at both time points.

In this work, aluminum and iron existing in coal fly ash were extracted by method of hydrochloric acid leaching. Effects of solid-liquid ratio, reaction temperature, reaction time, acid concentration, and raw ash mesh on recovery efficiencies of Al2O3 and Fe2O3 were investigated. XRD analysis indicated that anhydrite, hematite, mullite and quartz were the dominant minerals in the raw fly ash sample.

Two strains of PRRSVs were isolated in 2006 and 2016, respectively, and designated as FZ06A and FZ16A. Through the inoculation experiments, it was shown that FZ06A caused 100% morbidity and 60% mortality, while FZ16A caused 100% morbidity without death. By using genomic sequence and phylogenetic analyses, close relation of Chinese highly pathogenic PRRSV strain with FZ06A and FZ16A strains was achieved.

Emerging data have identified certain drugs such as scopolamine as rapidly acting antidepressants for major depressive disorder (MDD) that increase glutamate release and induce neurotrophic factors through α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor (AMPAR) activation in rodent models. This study aimed to identify the osteogenesis effect of icariside II (ICSII) and icaritin (ICT) in vitro. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) were treated with ICSII and ICT in order to detect the proliferation and differentiation of BMSCs, the expression of the osteogenesis-related proteins with or without osteogenic medium (OM) and genes, Runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx-2), osteocalcin (OCN), osteopontin (OPN), osterix, and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), and the phosphorylation levels of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). We found that the optical density increased and alkaline phosphatase decreased after the BMSCs were treated with different concentrations of ICSII; however, ICT showed an opposing effect.

Thiophene-bridged and thiazole-bridged diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) polymers for near-infrared (near-IR) photovoltaic applications have been investigated via density functional theory (DFT) and Marcus charge transfer theory. Compared with thiophene-bridged DPP polymers, thiazole-bridged polymers have higher ionization potentials (IPs) but poorer optical absorption and worse charge transport capability. Different beneficial substituents replaced the hydrogen atoms (H) on the thiazole rings for the sake of reversing the disadvantages of thiazole-bridged DPP polymers and making these compounds better near-infrared absorbing materials.

We have developed an efficient protocol for the synthesis of C-glycosylated phenanthridines. Tetrafuranos-4-yl and pentapyranos-5-yl radicals, generated from K2S2O8-mediated oxidative decarboxylation of furan- and pyranuronic acids, undergo attack to 2-isocyanodiphenyls and ensuing homolytic aromatic substitution to provide diverse C-glycosylated phenanthridines in satisfactory yields without resort to transition metals. This reaction tolerates various functional groups, and enables ready synthesis of complex oligosaccharide-based phenanthridines.

Although it is known that there is a high smoking prevalence among Chinese, key issues such as social and environmental factors impacting smoking initiation and persistence, the percentage of smokers considered nicotine dependence (ND), and the availability and use of ND treatments have rarely been investigated.
To address these issues, from 2012 to 2014, we conducted a large-scale study in the Zhejiang and Shanxi provinces of China using the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence and other validated questionnaires.

Visual objects contain rich local high-order patterns such as curvature, corners, and junctions. In the standard hierarchical model of visual object recognition, V1 neurons were commonly assumed to code local orientation components of those high-order patterns. Here, by using two-photon imaging in awake macaques and systematically characterizing V1 neuronal responses to an extensive set of stimuli, we found a large percentage of neurons in the V1 superficial layer responded more strongly to complex patterns, such as corners, junctions, and curvature, than to their oriented line or edge components.

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) can suppress immunologic damage in myocardial ischaemia/reperfusion injury (MIRI), however, the isolation and ex vivo expansion of these cells for clinical application remains challenging. We report on entanglement-based quantum key distribution between a low-Earth-orbit satellite equipped with a space borne entangled-photon source and a ground observatory. One of the entangled photons is measured locally at the satellite, and the other one is sent via a down link to the receiver in the Delingha ground station.
