Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is used to treat superficial colorectal tumors. Previous studies have reported the efficacy of ESD for treating residual or local recurrent colorectal tumors. This study sought to evaluate the efficacy of ESD in treating these lesions and to assess factors that prevent successful ESD.

Several reports have described major adverse events after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), such as perforation or bleeding. However, few studies have discussed the occurrence of post-ESD electrocoagulation syndrome (PEECS) after colorectal ESD. In addition, the occurrence of fever without abdominal pain in patients requires postoperative management similar to that required for PEECS.

Stomach cancer rarely develops in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), and Helicobacter pylori infection may increase the risk of FAP-related gastric cancer. We describe the case of a 64-year-old woman who developed multiple synchronous early gastric cancers without H. pylori infection.

Magnifying linked color imaging with indigo carmine dye (M-Chromo-LCI) enables sterically enhanced and color image-magnified observation of the superficial gastric mucosa. This study investigated the usefulness of M-Chromo-LCI for the differential diagnosis of gastric lesions.
100 consecutive small depressed lesions were examined with conventional white-light imaging (C-WLI), magnifying blue-laser imaging (M-BLI), and M-Chromo-LCI.

The opening and closing of the implantation window is important for successful pregnancy in eutherians. The recent study demonstrated that the window of uterine receptivity was prepared by the sole action of progesterone in mice, but the mechanism to close the window remained to be elucidated.
The pregnant mice were ovariectomized on the evening on the third day of pregnancy with a single injection of medroxyprogesterone acetate to induce delayed implantation (DI).

To investigate the molecular pathways involved in successful embryo implantation in mammals, we developed a novel method for gene transduction into the murine endometrium using in vivo electroporation. Plasmid DNA with an enhanced green fluorescence protein (EGFP) gene was injected into the uterine cavity of non-pregnant female mice, and electrical pulses were subsequently applied to the uterine horn using plate electrodes. EGFP expression was found only in the uterine luminal epithelium (LE), but not in the stroma.

Protein kinase C (PKC) mediates a central cellular signal transduction pathway involved in disorders such as cancer and Alzheimer's disease. PKC is regulated by binding of the second messenger sn-1,2-diacylglycerol (DAG) to its tandem C1 domains, designated C1a and C1b, leading both to PKC activation and to its translocation to the plasma membrane and to internal organelles. Depending on the isoform, there may be differences in the ligand selectivity of the C1a and C1b domains, and there is different spacing between the C1 domains of the conventional and novel PKCs.

Although magnifying endoscopy with narrow-band imaging (ME-NBI) can help identify the horizontal margin (HM) of early gastric cancer (EGC), little is known about the factors that can clarify the HM by using ME-NBI. We aimed to characterize the pathological features of lesions in which the HM was identified using ME-NBI.
The HMs of 639 differentiated-type EGCs treated with endoscopic submucosal dissection or surgery were analyzed using conventional endoscopy and ME-NBI.

Flying foxes, the genus Pteropus, are considered viral reservoirs. Their colonial nature and long flight capability enhance their ability to spread viruses quickly. We previously investigated rabbit hereditary cerebellar cortical degenerative disease, called cerebellar cortical abiotrophy in the veterinary field, and determined that the pathogenesis of this disease is the result of failed synaptogenesis between parallel fibers and Purkinje cells. In this study, longitudinal changes in the development and atrophy of the cerebellum of rabbits with hereditary abiotrophy after birth were morphometrically examined (postnatal day [PD] 15 and 42) using image analysis. Although development of the cerebellum in rabbits with abiotrophy was observed from PD 15 to PD 42, the growth rate of the cerebellum was less than that in normal rabbits.

Despite of the claim that maternal leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) - a member of interleukin 6 (IL6) family of cytokines - plays indispensable roles for murine embryo implantation, these roles remain undefined in humans because the potency of LIF on implantation appears to vary among individuals. Here, we showed that the contribution of LIF for murine implantation was dependent on the strains of mice (ICR, C57BL/6J (B6), ddY, BALB/c, DBA/2Cr and MF1 strains). Inhibition of LIF during the implantation period caused severe disruption of embryo implantation in B6 and MF1 strains.

Bone marrow cell infusion (BMI) has recently been suggested as an effective therapy for refractory liver disease; however, the efficiency of BMI using canine bone marrow cells (cBMCs) has not been reported. Acute hepatitis was induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) treatment in NOD/SCID/γc(null)(NOG) mice and wild-type (WT) C57BL mice, and the characteristics of liver dysfunction and the degree of hepatic injury and regeneration were compared between the two mouse models.

The formation of effective and precise linkages in bottom-up or top-down processes is important for the development of self-assembled materials. Self-assembly through molecular recognition events is a powerful tool for producing functionalized materials. Photoresponsive molecular recognition systems can permit the creation of photoregulated self-assembled macroscopic objects.

Molecular recognition plays an important role in nature, with perhaps the best known example being the complementarity exhibited by pairs of nucleobases in DNA. Studies of self-assembling and self-organizing systems based on molecular recognition are often performed at the molecular level, however, and any macroscopic implications of these processes are usually far removed from the specific molecular interactions. Here, we demonstrate that well-defined molecular-recognition events can be used to direct the assembly of macroscopic objects into larger aggregated structures.

Endogenous NAD-dependent glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) of C. glutamicum was replaced with nonphosphorylating NADP-dependent glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GapN) of Streptococcus mutans, which catalyzes the reaction of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate to 3-phosphoglycerate with the reduction of NADP(+) to NADPH, resulting in the reconstruction of the functional glycolytic pathway.
