The 8edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer Tumor-Node-Metastasis staging system separates classifications for the clinical (c), pathologic (p), and postneoadjuvant pathologic (yp) stages. We aimed to evaluate its application in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).
Patient data were obtained from the Taiwan Cancer Registry database.

Adjuvant chemoradiation is reported to have a survival benefit for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). We evaluated the "upfront surgery and pathological stage-based adjuvant chemoradiation" strategy, in which adjuvant therapy is guided by pathological stage, in locally advanced ESCC. Data from 2976 clinical stage II/III ESCC patients, including 1735 in neoadjuvant chemoradiation and 1241 in upfront surgery groups, were obtained from a nationwide database.

Continuity of care (COC) is positively associated with health care outcomes. However, the effect of COC on the reduction of asthma-related emergency department (ED) visits among older asthmatic patients is not clearly understood.
We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the Taiwan nationwide health insurance claims database between 2004 and 2013.

Although preoperative chemoradiation followed by surgery has been recognized as an efficient strategy for esophageal cancer treatments, several studies demonstrate survival benefits of postoperative chemoradiation for those undergoing upfront resection. The optimal sequence of surgery and chemoradiation remains unclear.
Data of 1647 patients with clinical stage II/III esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), including 1245 receiving preoperative chemoradiation followed by esophagectomy (pre-OP CRT group) and 402 receiving primary esophagectomy followed postoperative chemoradiation (post-OP CRT group), were obtained from a nationwide database.

This study investigates the nationwide utilization and temporal trend of hysterectomies in Taiwan.
The present study used the National Health Insurance Research Database that included claims of nearly the entire population in Taiwan since the inception of the National Health Insurance program in 1995. We analyzed age-adjusted rates of hysterectomies in Taiwan from 1997 through to 2010 and compared with the rates in 16 countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Hyperphagia increases eating-associated risks for people with dementia and distress for caregivers. The purpose of this study was to compare the long-term effectiveness of spaced retrieval (SR) training and SR training combined with Montessori activities (SR + M) for improving hyperphagic behaviors of special care unit residents with dementia.
The study enrolled patients with dementia suffering from hyperphagia resident in eight institutions and used a cluster-randomized single-blind design, with 46 participants in the SR group, 49 in the SR + M group, and 45 participants in the control group.

The government must reform and enhance current medical and long-term care services in order to respond effectively to societal ageing and labor shortage trends and to ensure sustainable operations. The post-acute care system should be reoriented on the home and community instead of the hospital. The Long Term Care Service Act integrates long-term care services that were previously dispersed amongst different departments, sets up a long-term care development fund, and improves the quality and allocation of long-term care services.

Although vascular access conversions to arteriovenous fistula (AVF)/arteriovenous graft (AVG) in incident and maintenance hemodialysis (HD) patients are reported to be associated with lower mortality and infection risk, it is unclear whether these effects are limited to the first year. The aims of this historical cohort study were to investigate patient characteristics of vascular access conversion and the impact of vascular access conversion on 1- and 3-year mortality and infection rates in incident HD patients with a permanent catheter to initiate HD.
Our study included 868 incident patients who underwent HD for at least 3 months and who, between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2006, received a permanent catheter within 3 days of starting HD.

Few consider the effect of progression in the CCI score (CCIp) on patient survival before HD initiation. That is CCIp = CCI-1 - CCI-3, where CCI(-1) is the CCI score in the first year before HD initiation, and CCI-3 is the CCI score in the third year before HD initiation.
