Experimental studies showed that controlled variable ventilation (CVV) yielded better pulmonary function compared to non-variable ventilation (CNV) in injured lungs. We hypothesized that CVV improves intraoperative and postoperative respiratory function in patients undergoing open abdominal surgery.
Fifty patients planned for open abdominal surgery lasting >3 h were randomly assigned to receive either CVV or CNV.

Prolonged catheter use is controversial because of the risk of catheter-related infection, but the extent to which the risk increases over time remains unknown. We thus assessed the time-dependence of catheter-related infection risk up to 15 days.
Our analysis was based on the German Network for Regional Anesthesia, which includes 25 centers.

To compare the effectiveness of 20:1 cafedrine/theodrenaline approved for use in Germany to ephedrine in the restoration of arterial blood pressure and on postoperative outcomes in patients with intraoperative arterial hypotension of any origin under standard clinical practice conditions.
'HYPOTENS' is a national, multicenter, prospective, open-label, two-armed, non-interventional study. Effectiveness and post-operative outcome following cafedrine/theodrenaline or ephedrine therapy will be evaluated in two cohorts of hypotensive patients.
