Stimuli that capture the central tendency of presented exemplars are often preferred-a phenomenon also known as the classic beauty-in-averageness effect. However, recent studies have shown that this effect can reverse under certain conditions. We propose that a key variable for such ugliness-in-averageness effects is the category structure of the presented exemplars.

There is strong evidence for abnormal salience processing in patients with psychotic experiences. In particular, there are indications that the degree of aberrant salience processing increases with the severity of positive symptoms. The aim of the present study was to elucidate this relationship by means of brain imaging.

Several magnetic resonance imaging studies have reported reductions in hippocampal volume in patients with psychosis. It is unclear whether structural abnormalities predate illness onset. We conducted a detailed, systematic literature search for studies reporting hippocampal volume in subjects with clinical high-risk, compared to healthy controls.

Impairment in working memory (WM) is a core symptom in schizophrenia. However, little is known about how clinical features influence functional brain activity specific to WM processing during the development of first-episode psychosis (FEP) to schizophrenia (SZ). We compared functional WM-specific brain activity in FEP and SZ patients, including the effects of the duration of illness, psychopathological factors and antipsychotic medication.

We aimed to identify the effects of intraoperative applied leukocyte-poor platelet-rich plasma (LP-PRP) during knee arthroscopy for degenerative lesions involving pain, function and quality of life.
We performed a randomized controlled, double-blind trial (RCT) including 58 patients for arthroscopic knee surgery for cartilage or meniscal degeneration with allocation into the LP-PRP (n = 24) or control group (n = 34). During arthroscopy, LP-PRP was injected intra-articular in the intervention group.

Research and theorizing suggest a processing advantage of category-level correlations over exemplar-level correlations. That research has also shown that category-level correlations serve as a proxy for inferring exemplar-level correlations. For example, an individual may learn that the demand for a product category, like cheese, in one store predicts the demand for this category in another.

Pseudocontingencies (PCs) allow for inferences about the contingency between two variables X and Y when the conditions for genuine contingency assessment are not met. Even when joint observations X i and Y i about the same reference objects i are not available or are detached in time or space, the correlation r(X i ,Y i ) is readily inferred from base rates. Inferred correlations are positive (negative) if X and Y base rates are skewed in the same (different) directions.

The primary stability of cementless total hip endoprosthesis is of vital importance for proximate, long-term osteointegration. The extent of micromotions between implant and acetabulum is an indicator of primary stability. Based on this hypothesis, different cementless hip joint endoprosthesis were studied with regard to their micromotions.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiologic results after isolated reconstruction of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) using the semitendinosus (ST) and gracilis (GR) tendons with the arthroscopic single-bundle technique.
All patients upon whom we had performed a single-bundle PCL reconstruction between 2002 and 2005 prospectively underwent a standardized follow-up examination after 2 years. Isolated PCL reconstruction was carried out on 41 patients during the observation period.

A 10-month-old boy presented with a history of a generalized cutaneous bullous eruption since 3 months of age. Emesis, flush, pruritus, and fatigue had accompanied relapsing episodes of sometimes extensive blistering. Histopathology showed dense dermal infiltrates of mast cells on hematoxylin and eosin and corroborating immunohistochemical staining.

The mass panic at the Love Parade 2010 attracted a great deal of public attention in Germany and abroad. The goals of this paper are to summarize the available data on the injured persons and their treatment, and to assess the preparations that should be made for such an eventuality and the acute measures that should be taken if it occurs.
Patient data from the Duisburg hospitals were subjected to a structured statistical analysis, and all of the measures taken were assessed by qualified evaluators on the basis of questionnaires, a consensus conference, and individual interviews of the clinical coordinators.

As a follow-up of a previously reported three-year study, we analyzed the periprosthetic acetabular cortical and cancellous bone density changes at ten years after implantation of a press-fit cup.
Prospective clinical, radiographic, and quantitative computed tomography examinations were performed within ten days and at mean periods of one, three, and ten years after total hip arthroplasty with a press-fit cup, a femoral stem with a tapered design, and alumina-alumina pairing. Periacetabular cortical and cancellous bone density (mg CaHA/mL) in the cranial, ventral, and dorsal regions about the cup were measured for twenty-four hips in vivo.

In the present research, we argue for the robustness of illusory correlations (ICs, Hamilton & Gifford, 1976) regarding two boundary conditions suggested in previous research. First, we argue that ICs are maintained under extended experience. Using simulations, we derive conflicting predictions.

The discoid meniscus is a common meniscal anomaly. Symptomatic discoid menisci treated by arthroscopic surgery were examined preoperatively and postoperatively by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Aim of this study was to quantify the amount of meniscal resection when treating discoid meniscus in children by partial meniscectomy.

Posterior sternoclavicular dislocations are a rare injury, representing <5% of all sternoclavicular dislocations and 1 in 1600 shoulder girdle injuries. Proper imaging with computed tomography and prompt diagnosis are essential steps in preventing potentially lethal complications observed in approximately 3% of all posterior sternoclavicular dislocations. Surgical treatment is necessary if closed reduction fails.

Previous research suggests a positive correlation between physical attractiveness and the expectation of positive outcomes in social interactions, such as successful persuasion. However, prominent persuasion theories do not imply a general advantage of attractive senders. Instead, the persuasion success should vary with the receivers' processing motivation and processing capacity.

Malfunction of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is common in early complex regional pain syndrome type I (CRPS I). This study was designed to evaluate the function of the SNS in patients with chronic CRPS I and to correlate the obtained data with hand function measurements.
Thirty-two patients of both the sexes in whom the diagnosis of CRPS I of the upper extremity had been established for at least 3 years before they were included in the study.

Case report.
To describe and discuss the case of a patient, later recognized to have sickle cell trait (SCT), who suffered from tuberculous spondylodiscitis and developed a spinal ischemia after spinal decompression and stabilization and to discuss the literature on this.
Spinal ischemia is a rare event and even more unusual after spinal surgery.

In his model of the biomechanics of the proximal human femur, Friedrich Pauwels assumes a resultant force acting on the femoral head that is created by the partial body weight and the force of the abductor muscles inserting at the greater trochanter. This model suggests a tensile force in the region of the greater trochanter. An exact examination of the muscle insertions at the greater trochanter resulted in a contrasting hypothesis assuming a local compression stress in the region of the greater trochanter.

When humans predict criterion events based on probabilistic predictors, they often lend excessive weight to the predictor and insufficient weight to the base rate of the criterion event. In an operant analysis, using a matching-to-sample paradigm, Goodie and Fantino (1996) showed that humans exhibit base-rate neglect when predictors are associated with criterion events through physical similarity. In partial replications of their studies, we demonstrated similar effects when the predictors resembled the criterion events in terms of similarly skewed base rates.

Neutrophil-derived oxidative stress plays a crucial role in acute lung injury. Hypochlorite/hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a major oxidant of neutrophils. Protein kinase C (PKC) may be an appropriate target for HOCl due to its functionally important thiols.

Chronic neck pain is widely prevalent and a common source of disability in the working-age population. Etiology of chronic neck pain includes neck sprain, mechanical or muscular neck pain, myofascial pain syndrome, postural neck pain as well as pain due to degenerative changes. We report the case of a 42 year old secretary, complaining about a longer history of neck pain and limited movement of the cervical spine.
