Lead-halide perovskites are well known to decompose rapidly when exposed to polar solvents, such as water. Contrary to this common place observation, we have found that through introducing suitable minor amount of water into reaction mixture, we can synthesize stable CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. The size and the crystallinity, and as a result the bandgap tunability of the strongly emitting CsPbBr3 nanocrystals correlate with a water content.

Based on survey data collected from 151 community-dwelling solitary Chinese older adults in Hong Kong, the present study used path analysis to examine the mediating role of sense of loneliness in the relationship between different sources and directions of social support and life satisfaction. The results showed that sense of loneliness mediated the effects of support from families, friends, and support for others on life satisfaction. In addition, a formal source of social support was not associated with life satisfaction among solitary older adults, although those with a more secure financial status had greater overall life satisfaction.

Mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) serves a central role in regulating cell growth and survival, and has been demonstrated to be involved in the pathological progression of posterior capsule opacification (PCO). In the present study, the potency of PP242, a novel dual inhibitor of mTOR complex 1/2 (mTORC1/2), in the suppression of the growth of human lens epithelial cells (HLECs) was investigated. Molecular identification suggested an edible mushroom, which was previously named as Craterellus odoratus should be revised as Montagnula donacina. A chemical re-investigation of the culture broth of this fungus resulted in the isolation of four rare tetracyclic bergamotane-type sesquiterpenoids, namely donacinolides A and B, donacinoic acids A and B, and three cadinane-type ones, namely donacinols A-C and a meroterpenoid (Z)-4-hydroxy-3-(3-hydroxy-3-methylbut-1-en-1-yl)benzoic acid. Herein, a mesoporous nanoplate multi-directional assembled BiWOarchitecture was successfully prepared and applied for the photocatalytic removal of NOx pollutants at low concentrations under visible light and simulated solar light irradiation. BiWO-180-C synthesized at a hydrothermal temperature of 180 °C with calcination exhibited an excellent conversion efficiency in the photocatalytic oxidation of gaseous NO. The crystallinity, morphology, specific surface area, pore environment, light absorption, and separation of photogenerated electrons and holes were investigated by various techniques; the excellent photocatalytic performance of BiWO-180-C was attributed to its special hierarchical mesoporous structure with an appropriate pore size and interconnected porous network, which imparted good gas permeability and fast mass transfer of reaction intermediates and final products of NO oxidation.

Vascular resistance is a major determinant of BP and is controlled, in large part, by RhoA-dependent smooth muscle cell (SMC) contraction within small peripheral arterioles and previous studies from our lab indicate that GRAF3 is a critical regulator of RhoA in vascular SMC. The elevated contractile responses we observed in GRAF3 deficient vessels coupled with the hypertensive phenotype provided a mechanistic link for the hypertensive locus recently identified within the GRAF3 gene. On the basis of our previous findings that the RhoA signaling axis also controls SMC contractile gene expression and that GRAF3 expression was itself controlled by this pathway, we postulated that GRAF3 serves as an important counter-regulator of SMC phenotype.

Based on continuous anaerobic co-digestion of cow manure with available carbon slowly released corn straw, the effect of adding available carbon quickly released fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) was explored, meanwhile microbial community variation was studied in this study. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) induced hypoxia can significantly upregulate the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) at the tumor-stromal interface, resulting in a promoted angiogenesis. Thus, an angiogenesis vessel-targeting nanoparticle (AVT-NP) consisting of photosensitizer, angiogenic vessel-targeting peptide, and bioreductive prodrug is developed for a chemo-photo synergistic cancer therapy, with which anti-cancer effect is achieved first by PDT and immediately followed with hypoxia-activated cytotoxic free radicals. With targeting capability, the AVT-NPs can effectively accumulate at the tumor site due to the promoted angiogenesis in response to PDT-induced hypoxia.
